Moving House Checklist

Moving house? Use our Handy Moving House Checklist!

Moving home can be an exciting time, but also one of the most stressful events of your life at the same time.  Calm the chaos of house moving by following our useful moving home checklist and you can put your mind at ease that nothing will be left behind!

A home moving checklist can really help

Packing up all of your precious belongings in preparation of your move need not be an overwhelming task.  With our helpful checklist you can make sure your move stays organised and calm, while at the same time knowing where everything needs to go on arrival at your new house and all of your boxes find their right home.

Eight weeks before your moving date

Give yourself plenty of time to go through this moving house checklist.  Get everything in order and sort through all of your stuff, wardrobes and cupboards.  Now would be a great time to separate out all those old clothes that you no longer wear and donate them to a charity shop, or sell them on eBay.

Clear out your clutter from your cupboards, loft and garage that you haven’t touched or used in years.  Do you really want to take all of this stuff with you to your new home if you didn’t use it in your old home?  Time to declutter your life and make it easier to move those possessions you want to keep with you.

Confirm your moving date

Another important task to do at this point is to confirm all of your moving details with your selling agent and solicitor, or your landlord if your rent your home.

Contact all of your household utility and service suppliers to notify them of your moving date.  Service providers such as your telephone and internet company will need to know so they can switch your service over to your new number and address the same day.

Do the same with your mail so any company or person that regularly writes to you will have your new address and change of address date to update their database with.

These may include the following people or agencies:

  • Bank or building society.
  • Doctors and dentists.
  • Insurers for your home, car etc.
  • Pension providers.
  • The DVLA to update your driving licence.
  • Your child’s school.
  • Your employer and HMRC.
  • Your local authority.
  • Organise a mail-forwarding service with Royal Mail or an address service provider to ensure your mail gets redirected to your new address.

Start packing for your house move

Start your packing as early as possible to get ahead of yourself.  You can start with packing things that you don’t use or need every day.  If you are moving during the spring or summer, then pack up your winter clothes, coats, hats and boots.

Carefully wrap up delicate ornaments and china.  Pack them into padded boxes and leave them in a spare room or in your garage where they will not be in the way.  Try to use packing boxes that are not too large or will become too heavy for your removal guys to pick up and carry.

A simple solution here would be to hire your packing boxes for a no-fuss home move.

As you start to pack up your rooms approaching moving day, clearly label each box with the contents.  This will help you to sort your boxes at the end of your move and enable your moving team to place them into the right rooms or areas for you.

Any large pieces of furniture that need to be disassembled – stick an envelope or small bag to one side where you can safely keep all of the screws and fixings together in one place.

Make an inventory

Keep a running inventory of everything that you pack up ready for moving.  This will make it easy for you to quickly scan to ensure that nothing has been missed.  You can use your inventory at the other end of your move and tick off each item from your list as it goes into your new home. This way you will be confident that nothing has been left behind.
